I hope that everyone has had a great summer.  That being said, it is almost over.  School starts back on the 22nd and teachers will be back at work on the 15th.  If you haven't gotten the Back to School Shopping finished, remember the Florida Back to School tax free days. They are August 12-14 and you can find out more information about what applies here.

A Twist on Packing School Lunchs

As school year approaches, I know I am going to be packing a lot lunches!  My kids are get tired of the same old things each day, so I've decided to get creative.  I discovered the art of packing Bento lunches and thought it looked like so much fun.

Need a new, fun way for kids to stay cool in the summer? Love water balloons but hate picking up small pieces of plastic all over the yard? Give sponge balls a try. They are softer than a snow ball and inexpensive to make!

 

There are endless sponge ball games kids can play; maybe they will even be encouraged to join you in some house cleaning?

Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area
Kids- bring a book and camera to a state park and take the challenge! Parents and kids can go online to print the rules and checklist of activities. Kids are required to complete five activities on the list, including reading a book in a state park, and send a photo of each one to enter the contest. Good luck! You will earn a FREE pass for you and your family to a State Park!
Where: Florida State Parks
When: Times vary at each park.
Who: Children 18 and under
How: Head to a State Park.  Be sure to check the website and print out the worksheet and rules.  You must take your camera and a book of choice.

Friday, August 12 - State Park Beginner's Fishing Program

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach will host a beginning fishing program on Friday, August 12, 2011, for participants of all ages and skill levels.Ranger Richard will teach the basics of fishing in the saltmarsh area by the Intracoastal Waterway. Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment, bait and supplies but this is not mandatory. Participants must meet fishing license requirements prior to attending the program.
Where: Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach
When: 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Who: All ages and skill levels.
How: Reservations are not required by are requested. 
Cost: The cost of each event is included in the regular park entrance fee of $5.00 per carload of two to eight people, $4.00 for one person in a car and $2.00 per pedestrian or bicyclist.

Saturday, August 13 - Annual Clearance Plant Sale Presents: 2nd Annual Family Affair

The Friends of Washington Oaks will hold their Annual Second Saturday Clearance Sale on August 13th from 10:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m.  We have to clear our benches ready for our Fall selection of plants.  Prices will be greatly reduced on most of our stock.  Washington Oaks Plant Sales always feature unusual and hard to find plants including Florida natives.  All proceeds benefit the park for enhancement of current and new facilities.

Saturday, August 13 - Orienteering Festival

Instructors will be available at this event.  Orienteering is the sport of navigation with map and compass.  It's easy to learn, but always challenging.  No pre-registration required.  Just show up and have fun.  Entries are assigned a Start Time on-site and are started at 2 minute intervals on each of the three courses offered.  Entries must start between 10 am and 1 pm.  Hike the course of your choice: 1 mile, 2 mile, or 3 mile.  All entries must finish the course of their choice within 2 hours of their start time and return to the registration area.  Prize medals to first, second, and third place individual participants on each course.

Friday, August 19 - State Park to Host Sea Turtle Talk

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach will host a Children's Sea Turtle Program on Friday, August 19, 2011, at the beachside pavilion on the day use side of the park.Join Park Ranger Tony to take a glimpse into the intricate world of sea turtles. Guests will learn about the sea turtles' life cycle as well as the species of turtles, their habitat, behavior, the important role they play in Florida and how to protect them. As part of the program will be conducted on the beach, please be sure to bring water, sunscreen and bug protection if necessary.

Ribbon~Button Bookmarks

Easy bookmarks for those little cuties about to start back to school!

These are SO simple and easy! Cute bookmarks for all those kids going back to school soon. 

What you need:

Scissors

Ribbon (grosgrain works best)

Buttons

Thread or embroidery floss

Lighter or a fray away product (I prefer the lighter since it it faster) 

Take you ribbon and measure it into 18 inch pieces. If it wrinkled, like mine always is, you can give it a quick trip under the iron.

To keep the ends from fraying with use, you can use Fray Away, or a lighter. I use the ...


BBQ Chicken Pizza

Ingredients

2 Boneless/Skinless Chicken Breasts

2 Tablespoons BBQ Rub (Found in grocery condiment and/or spice aisle)

1 Pound Pizza Dough (can be found in most grocery store refrigerated bakery aisles)

1 Cup BBQ Sauce (Sweet Baby Rays is recommended)

1/2 Red Onion (Sliced)

6 Cloves Garlic (Minced)

1 Cup Shredded Cheddar Chees

1 Cup Shredded Monterey Jack Cheese

Cornmeal

Directions

1) Pre-heat grill to medium high heat. Season chicken with BBQ rub. Grill chicken till cooked through, about 5 minutes per side. Let chicken rest.

Edible Cactus

Did you know that cactus are edible?  Well - some kinds are and they are the fruit of the month in August provided by the CDC.

Dozens of varieties bear different kids of fruit like prickly pears and figs.  Have you ever eaten a cactus?  We would love to hear about!

August Vegetable of the Month

Celery and Fennel

 Celery is one of the veges of the month for August.  It is used around the world as a vegetable and people eat the leaf stalk and the toproot.  Celery seeds are used in perfume and medicines in many places since they produce celery oil.

At times, celery seeds are mixed with salt to make a spice known as celery salt.

Fennel is also on the list this month.

Library Storytimes

at Flagler County Public Library

Story Time is a program at the library that includes picture book sharing, nursery rhymes, songs, finger plays, storytelling and.or other related activities such as puppetry and crafts.  Children get introduced to literature and are encouraged to develop a life-long interest in reading. 

There are different levels of development in children so there are Story Time options. 

Babytime - Ages infant to 1 - are on Wednesday mornings at 9:30am.

Toddler Storytime - Ages 1-2 - are on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 am.

Toddler Storytime - Ages 2-3 - are on Friday mornings ...
