National Toasted Marshmallow Day!

Have your very own marshmallow toasting party on National Marshmallow Toasting Day?  We dare you!  NO  We double dare you!  Ancient Egyptians would extract sap from the marshmallow plant and mix it with nuts and honey. Another pre-modern recipe uses the pith of the marshmallow plant, rather than the sap. Kids- bring a book and camera to a state park and take the challenge! Parents and kids can go online to print the rules and checklist of activities. Kids are required to complete five activities on the list, including reading a book in a state park, and send a photo of each one to enter the contest. Good luck! You will earn a FREE pass for you and your family to a State Park!
Where: Florida State Parks
When: Times vary at each park.
Who: Children 18 and under
How: Head to a State Park.  Be sure to check the website and print out the worksheet and rules.  You must take your camera and a book of choice.
Cost: Regular park fees.  Most range from $5 to $10 per carload.

Blackberry Cobbler

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar, divided
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold butter
  • 1/4 cup boiling water
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 4 cups fresh blackberries, rinsed and drained

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.

Edible Cactus

Did you know that cactus are edible?  Well - some kinds are and they are the fruit of the month in August provided by the CDC.

Dozens of varieties bear different kids of fruit like prickly pears and figs.  Have you ever eaten a cactus?  We would love to hear about!

August Vegetable of the Month


Celery and Fennel

 Celery is one of the veges of the month for August.  It is used around the world as a vegetable and people eat the leaf stalk and the toproot.  Celery seeds are used in perfume and medicines in many places since they produce celery oil.

At times, celery seeds are mixed with salt to make a spice known as celery salt.

Fennel is also on the list this month.

Library Storytimes


at Flagler County Public Library

Story Time is a program at the library that includes picture book sharing, nursery rhymes, songs, finger plays, storytelling and.or other related activities such as puppetry and crafts.  Children get introduced to literature and are encouraged to develop a life-long interest in reading. 

There are different levels of development in children so there are Story Time options. 

Babytime - Ages infant to 1 - are on Wednesday mornings at 9:30am.

Toddler Storytime - Ages 1-2 - are on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 am.

Toddler Storytime - Ages 2-3 - are on Friday mornings ...
